Floating Water Workshop was envisioned by Habithéque, a planning and design studio specializing in art, science, history, and innovation. The floating classroom design will be an educational center docked seasonally along the shoreline of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. The barge will feature interactive exhibits designed to educate the public about the local watersheds and act as flexible programming space for special events.
Biome Planters
Studio Sustena Design the three custom biome planters. Each planter houses native species unique habitats along the Southeastern Pennsylvania watersheds. Detailed with imagery of soil and ground structure of the inspired habitats, the facades of the planters illustrate how water moved through the environment. The planters intentionally overflow during heavy rainfall mimicking natural aquifers.
The downspout of this project evokes the mast of a shop connecting the physical design of the barge to the educational narrative surrounding movement of water throughout the barge landscape. The chain downspout highlights water as it flows to irrigate the planter below.
The meadow roof will offer visitors a close-up view of a constructed habitat. Areas of the roof will retain stormwater to simulate the natural landscape, allowing diverse species to thrive in the microhabitat. The habitat logs on the site will provide shelter and food for wildlife, encouraging an active environment above the classroom exhibits.
