The design team retrofitted the existing campus pathway to create the Spirit Bridge. The resulting design utilized the weight limitations bridge to create an updated sculptural centerpiece of the campus Studio Sustena was brought in to consult on the technical logistics of planting on-structure. Key components of the design were the custom planters for the project.
Studio Sustena advocated for plants and materials that could withstand wind erosion for a durable design inspired by the coastal wildlife native to the Hackensack River. The planting creates an immersive site experience inspired by the shoreline into the built environment. The resulting planters are constructed from light weight materials and are easy to assemble. The design prioritizes efficient drainage and irrigation to ensure the vitality of the plants.
